Mobile food van owners Lachlan and Cameron Hope have spoken out the Gladstone Observer about the challenges they faced when starting their food business.

The pair set up Scrumptious Tatties’, a mobile restaurant that serves home-style jacket potatoes and salads, just over a year ago. In an interview with the Observer Cameron Hope admitted that setting up the business involved more than they had first thought.

According to the Gladstone Observer article published earlier today, the Hope’s said they found it difficult to meet all of the council requirements, including having a commercial kitchen approved and obtaining a Food Safety Supervisor qualification.

The importance of food safety supervisor

In Queensland, all licensable food businesses are required to nominate at least one Food Safety Supervisor to help ensure that all food that is handled, prepared and stored in the business is safe to eat.

One of the main reasons the Queensland Government, along with other state governments, require food businesses to employ Food Safety Supervisors is as a way to prevent foodborne illnesses.

It is always a good idea to contact your local council before beginning your food business so that you can be aware of exactly what your food safety requirements are.

“We had a good contact in the council and they helped us through the process,” Mr Hope said.
