Rush to recall raw goats milk

June 23, 2015

Queensland’s Ebuta Goat Dairy is recalling their raw goats milk from Townsville stores after traces of E. coli were found to have contaminated the products.

The Ebuta Goat Dairy, which are permitted to sell unpasteurised goats milk products to the public, are currently rushing to recall all ‘Ebuta Dairy Goats Milk Unpasteurised’ that was packaged between: 11.06.2015 – 17.06.2015, has fresh use-by dates between: 20.06.2015 – 27.06.2015 or frozen use-by dates between: 20.12.2015 – 27.12.2015.

Raw goats milk is the only type of unpasteurised milk able to be legally sold in Queensland. Although very thorough testing must first be carried out before any raw milk can actually be sold.

Raw milk in Australia

Experts warn that raw milk products often carry a higher risk of causing food poisoning and other health related issues. If unpasteurised, harmful bacteria such as listeria, salmonella and E. coli can be present in milk and can lead to foodborne illnesses.

Late last year the dangers of raw milk were thrust into the public spotlight after the tragic death of a three-year-old toddler in Victoria was linked to the consumption of raw milk. In this instance, the raw milk that the little boy drank was reportedly been produced for cosmetic purposes and was not intended for human consumption.

What to do if you are affected?

Consumers who have purchase the affected milk are asked to please return the products to the place of purchase for a complete refund.

Also, Food Standards Australia New Zealand advise that if you think you might be affected after consuming any raw milk products, including the Ebuta Dairy Goats Milk Unpasteurised, you should contact your health care professional.
