How to safely utilise reusable grocery bags

June 25, 2014

In today’s modern age, people are becoming increasingly environmentally conscious with the choices they make.

With constant news stories about climate change and other environmental anxieties, the population is more dedicated than ever to reducing their carbon footprint. By using less non-renewable resources, making environmentally conscious choices regarding purchases, and using public transportation instead of driving cars we have discovered a multitude of ways to help our earth thrive.

When it comes to shopping for food, many consumers have begun to embrace the concept of utilising reusable bags for transporting their items. However, as is the case with most things, it’s important to be cautious about the way that you use your reusable bags. If you’re not taking the necessary precautions, your bags could begin to see a build-up of germs, and the environmentally-friendly option for produce transportation could do more harm than good.

Clean reusable bags properly

Once you have gotten your items home and stored your food appropriately, take the time to wipe down the surfaces where you placed your reusable bags to remove all traces of bacteria. Just like an item of clothing, make sure that you regularly launder your bags, and be sure to store them in a safe and sanitary location within your home. Remember, reusable bags should not be kept underneath your car seats or in the boot, as this provides a prime environment for bacteria to grow.

Use different bags for different foods

Just as you would separate your dry goods, ready-to-eat foods, raw meats and poultry in the kitchen, you should use different bags for different items too. Always use separate bags when it comes to transporting raw meat, and make sure that you take steps to avoid the leakage of containers. If possible, ask a store assistant to wrap risky items in plastic bags before you place them inside of your reusable bag.
