What is the Food Handling Certificate course?
The Food Handling Certificate course is nationally recognised training that teaches you to handle food safely at work. It covers personal hygiene, temperature control, cross-contamination, cleaning and sanitising, plus how to spot high-risk foods before they cause harm.
Food Safety First delivers the course entirely online, so you can study around your shifts. You choose one of two industry sectors when you enrol, and that choice determines the unit of competency you complete. Anyone can enrol. There are no prerequisites and no prior experience is needed.
5 steps to completing your Food Handling Certificate course online
1. Choose your course and industry sector
Before you enrol, confirm the industry sector you work in. Food Safety First offers two versions of the course.
Hospitality covers restaurants, cafes, bakeries, pubs and catering, and leads to unit SITXFSA005 - Use hygienic practices for food safety. The associated Food Handling Certificate course has 13 lessons.
Health & Community covers aged care, childcare, hospitals and disability services, and leads to unit HLTFSE001 - Follow basic food safety practices. The associated Food Handling Certificate course has 17 lessons.
The content included in the two versions of the course overlaps. The real difference is context, so pick the industry sector that matches where you actually work.
2. Enrol online
Enrolment takes a few minutes. Select your sector, then choose any optional extras such as express processing or a printed copy to display at work, then complete the payment.
You get 12 months of access from the moment you enrol, so there is no pressure to finish in one sitting. Your progress saves automatically after each lesson. Log out mid-shift and pick up exactly where you left off.
3. Complete the online lessons and quizzes
The course is built around short interactive lessons. Each one ends with a multiple-choice quiz covering what you have just read.
You need to answer every question correctly to move on, and you get five attempts at each quiz. This helps ensure the material sticks rather than to catch you out. If you get a question wrong, simply revisit the lesson and try again.
Most people work through the lessons and quizzes in about three to four hours.
4. Complete your case study and Observer Report

The case study presents a realistic workplace scenario and asks multiple-choice questions about it. It checks that you can apply what you have learned rather than simply recall it.
The Observer Report is the practical part, and the only stage involving another person. You perform everyday food safety tasks, such as hand washing, while a colleague or supervisor watches and confirms you did them correctly. Your observer needs to work in the food industry, but they do not need any special accreditation.
5. Complete your Final Submission and receive your Statement of Attainment
With your quizzes passed and your Observer Report signed off, complete the Final Submission form on your course page. This tells the assessor everything is ready for review.
Your Statement of Attainment is usually issued within one to two business days. It arrives by email, and you can print it and display it at work for Environmental Health Officers during an inspection. It lists the unit of competency you completed and is recognised in every Australian state and territory.
How long does the Food Handling Certificate course take?
Most people complete the Food Handling Certificate online in three to four hours. That covers the lessons, quizzes and case study combined, and it assumes a reasonably uninterrupted run at it.
The Observer Report sits outside that estimate, because the Observer Report depends on when you can arrange a shift alongside your observer. In practice, most people finish everything within a week.
You have 12 months of access, so studying across several short sessions is perfectly normal.

No. The Food Handling Certificate course has no prerequisites. It is designed for people starting their first food job as much as for experienced workers who need formal training.
Is the Food Handling Certificate course recognised across Australia?

How long is my Food Handler certification valid?
Your Statement of Attainment does not carry a set expiry date. Even so, food safety standards change, so refreshing your knowledge every few years is good practice, and some employers set their own renewal requirements.

What happens if I use all five quiz attempts?
